Background

About two years ago my aunt had transformed my Afro (borderline flat top) into dread locs. She was only in town for a few months so after she left I no longer had a loctician to help me maintain my hair. Shortly after she left, I lost my apartment due to financial reasons and was forced to move back in with my parents putting me in a state of depression. I let my hair go unmaintained and unkept for almost a year, my locs had become pretty matted and looked like a mix of a mini afro with locs coming out of the top. When I left the house I used to always feel embarrassed to the point I would wear a hood or hat every time.

I felt as if it was time to start over and was considering cutting it off cause they were so far gone until I came across Freshlocs. The stylists there took very good care of me and upfront are some of the most down-to-earth, genuine people I've ever met. They made my locs as good as new despite the condition my hair was in. My coworkers and friends were shocked and complimented the new style; one of them even admitted it was getting to the point where they were going to recommend I cut them off but glad they held their tongue. My mom even started to take pictures of me again just cause every time we were together as if I was back in high school going to prom again.

The Problem

Ever since I visited the shop, my confidence in my appearance skyrocketed and greatly improved my self-esteem. I became a regular there for obvious reasons, but there was always one issue I ran into for a few months every time I tried to make an appointment.

The shop vibe was a reflection of the employees; soulful, unique, and artistic, but their website looked as if it was it was built in the early 2000's. Not to mention navigating the content was not very intuitive or organized, and trying to schedule an appointment was kind of painful the first few times until I got it down.

So I built them a new page.

The Solution

Old Fresh Locs vs new
Old Fresh Locs vs new

It includes all the details and sections of their old website; but presents information in a more organized, sleek, modern design with code I wrote using Typescript and popular frameworks like React, Next.js, and Tailwind.

As I'm writing this, I still have yet to surprise them with what I've been working on. The next time I go in for an appointment, I plan to show them in hopes that they like it so much they'll want to continue to do business in the future.
